Old does not mean one kind of film
A 1950s Japanese mystery, a 1980s animated adventure and a 1990s comedy offer different experiences. Use release years and original languages to narrow the catalog without treating several decades as a single genre.
Rashomon and Seven Samurai
These are separate Akira Kurosawa films with different stories and release years. Rashomon is listed as 1950 and Seven Samurai as 1954. Open the premise that interests you before assuming the most famous title is the right starting point.
Restored picture, original composition
A restoration can improve an older source without changing its intended frame shape. Black bars are not automatically missing video. Compare the edition description if a picture seems cropped or unusually stretched.
A remake needs its own year
Some classic names have later versions. Keep the production year in a bookmark or recommendation so another person can find the same film. A new availability date does not make the production itself new.
